A decision was made by the BAERA (WRM) Board to make only the minimum amount of repairs to the track east of Rio Vista Junction. The idea was to use what life remained in the track. When the track supertendent reported that in his opinion the track was not safe for passenger trains, public train operation was discontinued. The thought was to stop operating before a derailment occurred.
Train hating had NOTHING to do with it. This was a business decision. Although the Prarie Trains were popular with the public, they did not bring in enough money to keep the track up to at least Class One standards to allow passenger train operation. The track today is Excepted standard (no passenger trains). Track west of RVJ is maintained to Class Two standards.
