It is a push poll question, but unfortunately, from my experience it is pretty accurate synopsis of the still poorly planned, largely mismanaged and politically dubious project CHSRA is still trying to sell the public. So, it's not that unfair.
If you ask folks, yes or no, are they in favor of "high speed" rail as a good idea, a majority of folks do still tend to support it. We do use, could use more of, and would use, far faster, much more frequent, reliable, and affordable rail services in CA.
Now to the real questions, what does "high speed" rail mean to these people? And, does the "super high speed" system that the CHSRA is promoting meet any of those peoples actual observed travel needs?
LOSSAN for approximately $5 billion, gets you hourly/half hourly (express/local) services, on a 125 mph maximum speed, fully grade separated corridor, and reduces running time LAUPT to SD to 1:30 for non stop and under 1:55 for multi-stop services. These projects, as opposed to the bloated CHSRA project, are well planned, many cleared or exempt environmentally, and could be putting people to work doing something we actually need in the woefully congested I-5/US 101 corridor, where there is actually a proven demand for rail service. Similar benefits from that level of investment can be had in the other two corridors, as well.
