* also rated for the Creal branch

(Engines not listed with a tonnage rating on a branch cannot be used without the Superintendent's permission.)

Speed limits: mostly 49 mph between Mojave and Searles; mostly 30 mph between Searles and Lone Pine. Between Searles and Olancha: Further restricted to 25 mph - DRS-6-6-1500, S6, S2/S4; to 20 mph - EF415A (F7A*), EP415A (pass F7A*), GP9, ES410 (NW2*), FS412 (H12-44*); to 15 mph - F7B, EP415B (pass F7B*). *Listed in the speed limit section but no tonnage rating listed for these engines.

The Jawbone Local worked out of Mojave a day up and a day back three trips a week so could have easily had its own engine assigned. Not sure when the Mojave roundhouse closed or if they still fueled engines there, otherwise power would probably be rotated to Bakersfield for service as part of a helper set. We know that SD9s and GP9s were used to Lone Pine before with the SD39s (not purchased until late 1968). Were the Baldwin road switchers used out of Mojave? If so, they may have been used. I think there was a good chance the RSD12s may have made some trips when they worked Tehachapi (after all they were salvaged from RSD5s that worked the branch). I really doubt any of the RS11s or switchers made anything more than maybe a test run. It is interesting that the GP9s and F7As (but not the RS11s) are restricted to 20 mph, that there isn't a tonnage rating for the F7A but for the F7B, and why would a B unit be further restricted to 15 mph. We know that the F7s did run on the line for movie work. Note that the tonnage ratings did not differentiate trains for Trona and the Jawbone local, so the same power to Lone Pine would have been to Searles. Unless there was a later superintendent's bulletin, the RSD15s, C628s, SD35s, SD40s and SD45s used on the main would not be permitted on the Lone Pine or Creal branches.

A photo of anything other than a RSD5, SD9, GP9, SD39; or an F7 in movie service, between Searles and Lone Pine/Owenyo is apparently scarce.

SP 70 tons:

Looking at the San Joaquin and Los Angeles division Special Instructions - The GE 70 tons (AS407 class) are listed. It looks like they could run on almost all the mainlines and branches in the Valley, as are the 44 tonners. The LA basin is much the same except they are not specifically listed as being allowed on many of the restricted spurs. The 70 tons are not listed for the Lone Pine or Creal branches, or anywhere south (RR east) of Mojave into to the LA basin - but there is a tonnage rating for a GE70 ton over Tehachapi!

SP 5115 apparently worked some branch for many years on the Rio Grande division possibly out of El Paso; then retired probably in Los Angeles area.

After the Gila Tomahawk trains 381/382 ended, a 70 ton was still assigned to the Tucson Div for several more years. Did they also work freight to Globe or another branch?

The only apparent use of mu sets of GE 70 tons outside of Oregon appears to have been on the SD&AE.
