Found my copy of SP San Joaquin Valley Line by Dill which does have a few photos.
Tom gets an A+ for memory. There is a photo of an SD9 with an ashcan light and 701 in the train indicators at Saltdale dated June of 67 (clearly on jointed rail). Earlier trains in 52 and 53 with mikes 3227 and 3201.
Diesels on the Lone Pine/Jawbone/Owenyo local seem have been limited to single units - RSD5, then SD/GP9, then primarily SD39 and back to SD/GP9. Other possibilities still exist.
Unless you actually witnessed as set of SD40/45 units going to the Navy interchange near Inyokern to drag the Navy diesels out on their own wheels, I would question it. By the 1980s these probably would have moved by flat car. The one at the Dalles was apparently surplused after 9-11 concerns ended the dam tours by train. I ran the one at Nebo a few years ago though it was rarely used. It was recently surplused and auctioned, I expect it to show up again somewhere.
