While we are lamenting the former SP&S line, and dreaming of tunnel construction, consider what the traffic picture would look like if the Milwaukie road line had been rail banked till needed or upgraded gradually over the years. It was built more as a through route from the midwest to the Pacific/Tacoma vs. two lines routed through every potential source of small town traffic that no longer exists. Better grades and shorter route, what were the corporate rail heads thinking in the 80's not to embrace this piece of infrastructure as the line of the future. Am I out in the clouds or thinking there was not enough foresite?
