To J.B.Bane: Yes, The Milwaukee Road Lines West was the shortest rail route from Minneapolis to Puget Sound, however this straight line construction came at a cost. Your statement of " Better Grades " is in fact wrong. In order to build a shorter line, The Milwaukee Road went through the Rockies, Bitterroots, and Cascade Range. Both Pipestone Pass and the Beverly grade Westbound were 2% or worse, with many sharp curves as well. The grades on St. Paul Pass in the Bitterroots were 1.6% or worse in both directions. While this was less than the GN or NP lines, these grades were the reason The Milwaukee Road chose to electrify the mountianous portions of Lines West.
One possible solution for BN would have been to rebuild the Milwaukee line over Snoqualmie Pass and use it for Eastbound trains, joining back up with the ex - NP line in Lind, WA. Then the ex - GN line over Stevens Pass could be used for mostly Westbounds, where the grade is less and the run through Cascade Tunnel is downhill ( no fans needed ).
