Back around early Jan. of '81, I was given tacit permission to hobo the next days train out of Campo and ride the turn through the gorge. When I got there that rainy morning, the train had been annulled and that was that.
I did make up for it a few years later with a couple of motorcar rides, once from the east end at Coyote Wells to near Dos Cabezas and the second time from Clover Flat over the big bridge and into the gorge. Didn't get awfully far and I'm really glad I was observant and only at around 10 mph, as we exited a short tunnel to find the rail in front of us sagging sans ties over a gulch.
If Spreckels only knew what he had started.
