Thanks for the info George. I was looking for private PE r/w along Aliso St. I researched the
City of LA web site in the Survey Engineering Topographic maps area and found (hosted by USC as is the Brew 102 photo)
an excellent map of the downtown area. "WPA Land use survey map for the City of Los Angeles, book 6 (Hollywood District to Boyle Heights District), sheet 32. Includes: [Title page and] legend [for Book] no. VI; Composite index to Land use map books [for Book 6]; Index to Book no. 6.; Land use survey - City of Los Angeles. Department of City Planning. These maps were prepared with the assistance of the Works Progress Administration project no. 665-07-G-226 through 1939 to 1940. The land use data contained herein was compiled from a survey made with the assistance of the Civil Works Administration project no. 642, State Emergency Relief Administration project nos. 1-F2-318 and 1-F2-318A and Works Progress Administration project nos. 65-3-4377, 1101-2011 and 465-03-3-106. This survey functioned from Dec. 18, 1933 to May 8, 1939 and covers approximately 460 square miles within the boundary of the City of Los Angeles. It includes 347 colored drawings bound in 10 volumes of which this is no. VI. The land use survey was supervised by the Zoning Engineer. The land use maps were supervised by the Illustrative Planning Engineer for the Sponsoring Department." Navigate to page 4 and zoom in as close as possible. It predates the freeways, but shows PE & all other railroads. I found it interesting that the PE was absorbed into the Interstate 10 from east of downtown. The SP Machine Shops are shown with turntable! No sign of Union Station as the survey in the area was likely done before it was constructed. Also on the map would be the Bullring Yard, SP Taylor Yard, L.A. Railway lines, Santa Fe Washington Yard, the SP J Yard and lots more. In the Brew 102 photo, one can see one set of rails on the inside of a curved road heading towards Macy St/Brooklyn Ave. Is that the PE or did they go up and over the river in the middle of Aliso St. and then curve northerly? It's hard to read on the map, but did PE go into a tunnel past Macy St.? I think the map says P.E.R.R. Substructure but blurred. So many questions and too much to do around this house at the moment. It's pretty amazing to see what used to be and what still exists. Happy map surfing! Signing off for now.
