Yes, while shaving a few minutes off the PDX-SEA schedule is nice, that is not the reason for the bypass. And shaving a few minutes off the schedule is not what will enable Amtrak to add service. There is no room on the Point Defiance line for additional Amtrak trains. The purpose of the bypass is to allow increased service, and I agree with the previous poster that in a populated corridor, there are many benefits to good dependable rail service. I have been very pleased with the Cascade service since it came in about 13 years ago. Increased service makes it even more convenient. I will be sad to lose the scenery of the Point Defiance line, but grateful for regular rail passenger service between the two cities.
