I remember the Capt'n well, having grown up a few blocks from his shop, at that time in the mid-1960's in the St. Francis Square shopping center. Anyone from the area during that time will surely remember Egon's deli, and the well stocked hardware store where one could purchase replacement parts for the cheap aluminum windows used in thousands of Doelger homes.
My dad was an HO modeler with a small part of his layout devoted to traction. The Capt'n stocked a lot of traction modeling supplies and if remember correctly, had a small HO traction shelf-type layout in the shop.
My memories of the Capt'n from almost 50 years ago, recall a pretty gruff character, maybe from his past as a merchant marine seaman, which I heard took him often to Japan where he purchased a very large collection of brass traction models for his garage filling HO layout. We visited his layout once or twice, he too lived in Daly City. From what I remember, his layout was very nice, and quite large.
At the time of his hobby shop, he had left the seafaring world and worked for the Post Office, hence the reason his shop did not open until the late afternoon, when he was finished with his regular day job.
I remember him always sporting a dark navy blue wool watch cap, which I always felt gave him a somewhat menacing appearance. I left Day City in mid-1970's and I always wondered whatever happened to him.
