Re: Last Run Of Southwest Chief Over Raton Pass?

I, too, think the Chief should serve Albuquerque and stay
on the Raton Pass route. Not serving the biggest city in
New Mexico is ridiculous!
I read somewhere that it will cost the BNSF almost as much
to upgrade the Transcon to Amtrak speeds as it will to keep
Raton Pass in use. If this is so, then there is no good reason
for the Chief to move to the Transcon.
Two questions:
1. How much does New Mexico spend each year on
building and maintaining highways?
2. How much money would New Mexico get if the US and
New Mexico restored the tax rate on millionaires and billionaires
to 1950s levels?
Folks, there is money, plenty of it, to pay for needed infrastructure --
it is just being hoarded by the extremely wealthy. Just think of the
many jobs that would be created if the US laid more tracks and
made more passengers cars and locomotives and hired more
people so that we could have a really good passenger train
system.
(One cannot have a truly meaningful discussion about railroads
without at the same time discussing the context in which these
railroads exist.)
I hope for the best for both the Railrunner and the Southwest Chief!
