locomotive fires

What's up with all the locomotives catching fire? I keep reading about it in train news and it was involved in part in the deadly runaway in Canada. I remember SP used to leave engines idleing for days but I had never heard of engines fires. Is this a new phenomenon? Is it related to the newer model GE'S ?
