What the Russian locomotive is doing is exhaust flame out, usually caused by too rich of a mix causing excessive smoke that ignites when it hits enough air. GE's and ALCO's are good at that due to the type of turbo's they use. EMD's semi-gear driven turbo lacks turbo lag and doesn't have the flame out issue. What most of this thread has been about are full fledged fires. GE's have them the most often. I've seen units fresh from the shop will all new fuel lines have a line fail and catch fire right out of the shop -- I think its a major design flaw more than anything. Some lines last forever, others last a few hours.
