As most of us know the Nixon administration created Amtrak to help kill the passenger train once and for all. More than once, I have read information claiming that the SDP-40F's were created so that when Amtrak disintegrated, those locomotives could easily become marketable to the freight roads. The name "Tricky Dick" (and worse) was well deserved.
