IIRC - The SDPs contained a second 1000 gal water tank above the frame and near the endo of the loco. EMD warned Amtrak against placing the water tanks at the rear of the loco due to the adverse effect it would have on ride quality and recommended that they be left out, but Amtrak wanted less water stops for the locos.

I always wondered how they would work w/o the extra tank, and if the dash-2 would have had the ride issues.
