Bet governments won't be so quick to pull up abandoned tracks now. Trails could still be built along side the tracks as long as the tracks are still "in use", which means rails left in place and probably some occasional maintainence.

I agree with Mike on the how the rails to trails thing has gotten out of control. A lot of history has been lost thanks to the rails to trail folks. I know some will argue that some history has been saved and its true a few bridges and tunnels have been saved here and there, but a lot of railroads that may have survived meet an early demise too thanks to this program.
