Unfortunately our political system and somewhat our society is based on extremes.
If you only give someone the black and white choice of being conservative or liberal, in most cases their answer is incorrectly interpreted. Most of us do not unquestionably support the base or platform of either party, but are a shade of gray.
Personally I am, like the majority of America, somewhere in the middle but am somewhat more conservative than liberal. I support various concepts across the entire political spectrum, but not always how they are proposed for implementation.
The original purpose of our political system was to balance the majority and the minority, normally requiring them not to impose their sometimes extreme or radical agenda on all of us, but to reach a reasonable compromise with the minority bringing their actions towards the middle so it might best serve all of us. You will never be able to please everyone, but we have lost the ability to compromise to something reasonable.
The Supreme Court just overturned limits on political contributions, so those active in the party's can continue to exert their influence to limit our choice to black or white. Too bad we don't elect a third party or members of the current parties more towards the middle enough to become a majority or minority with influence.
