Sonic continues to expand. They now handle most of Los Angeles and the Sacramento area. But remember, you must be within a few miles of the AT&T exchange. Good for cities, not so good for suburbia.
The way it works: They put their equipment in the AT&T exchange (telephone companies can do that) and AT&T just maintains the pair from the exchange to your home or company.
If you are lucky enough to live in Sebastopol, California you can get 100Mb/S for the same price (about $57) and 1Gb/S for less than $100. And those are symmetric speeds. But it is early days. You should see the pleading posts on their blog... "Me next. Please..." They are now going through the hassle to start installing fiber in the Inner Sunset of San Francisco.
