At this point in time, with no operable steam locomotives
at all, they do not need a locomotive engineer, per se.
They do need a person who can plan, budget and staff to
get all 3 locomotives back into service. That takes
mechanical knowledge, yes, but it ain't rocket science.
There are at least 2 more people that need to hold hands
with Ed and walk out the door with him. Then, there need
to be some condition set with Omaha by the incoming
manager on budgets and manpower and authority, in order
to get things done.
A lot of work is needed to repair the damaged interdepartmental
relationships that Ed ruined. He burned a lot of bridges to
the mechanical department, track department, and field
operating personnel.
First thing they could do is bring back some of the guys
he got rid of, if for no other reason than to show a
fresh group of people what to do, why and when to do it,
how to do it, and what happens when you don't. And what
not to do and why. Right now, 844 and 3985 are great examples
of that.
Yes, it might require a few people in Omaha to eat some crow.
They may have to give these guys the freedom and authority
to get it done without looking over their shoulders 245/7
and micromanaging everything they do.
I think some of those experienced people would come back
under the right conditions and circumstances. But they
are not going to come back and get burned again.
Doing it this way gives time to recruit engineers and
firemen for when the things are ready to run.
