As far as I know the cars could run together. I believe most of the Canadien and newer US heavy rail commuter operations have gone to a 575vac HEP, so they aren't compatible with the older 480vac used by Amtrak and others unless changes are made to each car or HEP genset. Then again, Metrolink and Coaster may have specified something in the HEP control or communications line that is incompatible.
