The railroads are in for nothing but nightmares. In the trucking world, all these exhaust aftertreatment and diesel EGR systems have caused nothing but problems. Fuel usage skyrockets ( when did Environmentalism replace Conservation?) and the reliability plummets. The DEF systems in trucks won't work in temperatures below zero, the engines constantly throw malfunction alarms and they produce rubbish power.
I am shocked that the railroads are not on a pre-buy binge right now to get as many pre-Tier 4 units as they can, or are not rebuilding Tier-0 or earlier units ahead of deadlines. That may be what UP did with their SD40-2 rebuilds but they sure didn't do many. Maybe they are just figuring on doing what truck lines are doing now and escalating depreciation schedules on Tier-4 units because they will have 1/4 the useful lifespan of pre-emissions equipment.
Run and hide, it doesn't matter what Tier-4 combo they come up with, Gensets, big high-rpm diesels, exhaust retrofits for 710/265/Gevo/FDL whatever. They will be expensive ill-running junk.
