Agreed that in 2014, "news" can't possibly sell if its done via a monthly magazine. But that was basically true 10 years ago as well and Trains was a better magazine then. The problem is not their overall business model, it's that within their potential market (i.e. railfans and railroaders) they cater to "old farts" by consistently doing articles on tourist railroads, steam preservation and Amtrak/high speed rail. Even though a lot of our favorite roads are long gone, there is still a ton of stuff going on in the industry today, an example being the loss of classic signals in the ongoing ptc implementation. How about some in depth articles on that as an example, maybe a then and now comparison with the old vs. new signals. Just one of many things that could be written about but aren't.
There used to be much more insight on the industry in the magazine and actual happenings on the railroad, etc. That's not "news" per se but instead, an inside look at railroading that the average railfan does not have access to. Monthly articles on preservation of steam engines that have been obsolete for 60 years and intercity trains that are essentially a subsidized vacation on wheels for older people? It just gets kind of old...
