The airlines used to have this attitude, but it is much better for the airlines to replace short flights with long flights. The yield per landing slot is much improved.

When I travel to Cologne I fly from San Francisco on Lufthansa to Frankfurt and take the Lufthansa code share train to Cologne. You even get frequent flier miles.

Before all the Homeland Security stuff I used to be able to check my bag through to Cologne and it came up on the carrousel at the station.
