A train, freight or passenger, has only one Conductor, who is in charge of the train. On Amtrak, the other trainman is an Assistant Conductor -- there is also a difference in pay rate between the two crafts. On the freight RRs, when they had passenger service, the "assistant conductors" were called "trainmen", and on many RRs only the conductor handled the tickets and cash. On Amtrak, the conductor and assistant conductor both handle tickets and cash. Whatever SMART will do depends on the contract negotiations with the union.
