As SMART is POP, the "ticket selling and other "old days" crap" (which is, BTW, typically USAn; in the real world, those seat tags are completely unknown; it is the conductor's task to remember whether there are new passengers) is not needed.
Actually, it would be better anyway if the driver controls the doors, because he has a better overview of what's up with the train. And modern regional rail rolling stock has just buttons on or near the door to open the door. So, the driver unlocks the doors at the platform side, and for closing relocks (and if needed has the option of force closing).
So, it looks to me that most "requirements" for conductors on regional trains are caused by labor, and not by real operation needs.
