Re. the latitude - you're right, and it got me looking at some maps. [earth.nullschool.net] Interesting. Madrid is on about the same latitude as New York or Eureka CA. Paris about the same as London ... Labrador or Prince Rupert BC. Oslo ... Anchorage AK. Iceland ... Fairbanks AK. The Gulf Stream and general Atlantic circulation patterns are important ... cut them off and Western Europe reverts to the climate of its latitude, and that's Cold.
