The great majority of the water in California is used for agriculture. A third of all fruits and vegetables consumed in the US are produced in California. The drought in California is encouraging more efficient use of water by farmers. This is mainly by changing crops, using more efficient methods of irrigation and, in the worst cases, keeping fields fallow.
So far this year I have had to write checks for $29,000 to improve irrigation on my family's farms.
The whole country will start to notice the drought when it hits their pocketbooks or they just can no longer get that particular item on their plates.
California has been slow to regulate groundwater. This last year a bill was finally passed that will start to regulate water extraction. California was the last state west of the Mississippi to regulate groundwater. Sort of an anti-nanny state.
