Unfortunately, fixing the bridge isn't the only monetary challenge. Before the branch was shut down, parts of it were rated "Class 1" (10 mph freight, 15 mph passenger) and others "Excepted" (less than 10 mph freight, passenger not allowed).

TAMC, which owns the right of way, has two unfunded fantasy projects for the line- a continuation of CalTrain south of Gilroy to Seaside or Monterey (and from Gilroy to Salinas completely on UP rails) and light rail transit between Castroville and Seaside or Monterey.
