If you look at the SN car at Western Railway Museum, you will see the the outside switch controls only the traction motor power. It was thrown only when cars operated on the former Northern Electric lines north of Sacramento or on Key System tracks in Oakland. Compressor and light circuits have automatic voltage changeover switches.
