$10K has been a magic number for Feds and cash for a long time. Went to Expo in Vancouver BC in 1986, and at the border coming back all they asked was whether I was carrying fruit, or $10k+ in cash or negotiable securities. No sir. Welome back to the USA!
Being in a rental car with OR plates, and with a CA DL, probably didn't hurt, and that was way before the TSA and passports for everything everywhere. Can you even get on a plane for domestic flight without a passport any more (I haven't had to go to LA that way recently)?
In the other direction, the Canadians weren't interested in cash but did want to know if we had fruit (disposed of one WA apple) or guns. Both ways, there was less delay than I usually had at the GGB toll plaza, on the bus, for my daily commute. And the McDonalds in Bellingham accepted Canadian coin so we were able to get rid of the remainder. In fact, on that whole trip, with multiple border crossings, the only time there was an actual search (minimal, but done) was on the dock entering Port Angeles from Victoria. Ah, the good olde dayze ...
