The shoefly that everyone is talking about is between Sunol and Hearst. It was built by the UP immediately after the SP abandoned the canyon so that a new bridge could be built over the Pleasanton-Sunol road. The SP tracks had not been ripped up yet so it made for a convenient by-pass. Once the new bridge was in operation the tracks were removed from the rest of the SP ROW.
