How not to be a doofus with a camera

I found this post on a birder's website, but I think it might have some railfan parallels.

Have you ever had someone do something like this?: "And along comes a photographer, walking up the access road, camera, tripod. Pro-caliber Nikon body, pro-caliber nikon lens. expensive tripod. He walks up, and proceeds to set up and start shooting. Right directly in front of me, directly in my line of sight."
