4449 was making a workday run from SJ to SF, scheduled to pass Lawrence Station in the early afternoon. I took time off to go over and watch it. The usual wait-an-hour-for-a-thirty-second-event thing.
There were a fair number of people there, on the SJ-bound (left side) platform, with still and video gear.
This guy drives up, parks, then shouts across the tracks from the SF-bound (right side) platform, "Are you guys waiting for the train?" "Yes." "Which track is it going to be on?" "The one over there where you are."
"Oh. Then what are all of you doing over there?" "Look where the sun is. Your side is in the shade." "Oh. Thanks. I guess I'll come over to your side." Which he does.
And then, having seen the photographers' setups at various places along the platform, he asks "Where should I be to get the best picture?", as if the all other guys there hadn't already worked it out. One of them explained it as clearly and nicely as he could: "You go over there between those two metal things and crouch down real low." I shouldn't have to tell you that those "two metal things" were the rails 4449 would be using.
Some times the people can be more interesting than the trains.
