My cousin was a volunteer for a railway museum and was engineer of a train one afternoon when some stupid idiot did something similar. She told me that some dude plopped himself about 3 feet from the tracks and took pics of his 2 kids standing on the rails with the train about 1 minute away. A railfan taking photos nearby yelled at them not to do that, but ignored. My cousin pulled the horn non-stop until her loco was almost to them, then they finally backed off. At that time he AND his kids gave the train the bird and tossed rocks at it.
This happened at a spot of the railway where the tracks was next to a public road for about half mile and a spot where normally responsible railfans take their pics. In fact the railfan that witnessed took pics (with his 35mm, since digital cams were just coming out and expensive) and sent copies to the railway office.
