I think the point is that the feed originats out of state not in California. Most grain in California in not for feed grain, yes there is some corn,Milo,hay and alfalfa grown in the state but this may not be what the farmer needs, it may be a blend of several grains which can be shipped as one car load.
If it were to originate in California with in say 300 miles, it was at one time, that trucking would be more economical. But as the price of fuel has gone up so much the economic cost to ship by rail has most likely has shrunk that distance to some extent.
What that figure is someone may know, I don't my self.
Lets be clear here, we all know train shipping is and has always been the most economical way to ship goods from point A to B and at some point it requires other modes of transportation to get the good to its final destination be it truck of your car to get it to the final user. That is fact, no matter what the item is.
Everyone can't possably have a rail head, so trucking is and will always be part of the equasion. The point is to reduce the amount of trucking needed to get the goods to market,or it's final user.
I think we all are in agreement with that.
