In 1971, this Streamline Moderne building would have only been about 40 years old, which was not considered old enough to be historic. At the time, most preservation efforts were focused on Victorian era architecture, which was anywhere from around 70-90 years old.

The Transbay Terminal was "old enough" by the time it was torn down a few years ago, but it was largely considered run down and inelegant. More importantly, it was in the way of a massive redevelopment project that has been transforming that area in the city.

Preserving bus terminals is pretty rare, and although the exterior of the ATSF terminal was pretty slick, it is hard to imagine how it would be used now if it had somehow survived to the present day. I don't know of any preserved classic bus terminals.
