I saw westbound freights from Antonito put out plenty of smoke on occasion back in the 60's. Do modern fans want too much smoke, yes. Back in the day a lot of pictures were rather uninteresting because all you got was an economy haze. You looked for the spots where the engine would be working to get more smoke. Cold was good because it made the exhaust steam condense for more "smoke". The smokey images tended to be more dramatic. Today's runbys make smoke more predictable but it is not always the right "kind" of smoke. Sigh. Life's a @#$%& then you die.
