As far as smoke goes there are a lot of reasons. First, are you firing with coal or oil? They are apples and oranges.

BOTH have to have their flues sanded to get rid of all that carbon. That makes a lot of black smoke. If you know how to fire a steam engine with oil it is easy to make smoke with the firing valve. The company frowned on that as a waist of fuel. They kept track of how much fuel you used between point A and point B.


You could make a coal burner smoke by using the blower and the hogger had to be in on it.
