I mean this with no attitude or disrespect, but how could you possibly claim to be a railfan with extensive knowledge of railroads and operations if you were THAT unprepared for the realities of railroading as a job.
In my 17 years being a railfan (I'm 31) I have had the good fortune to meet and become friends with dozens of railroaders from all over. All my time spent in the cab, yard or out in the real world with these guys, hearing their stories and getting a hint at what railroading is like made me NEVER want to work for a railroad EVER.
The best case scenario, you have no life for probably 20 years or more unless you want to be the type who lays off frequently and pisses everybody off. Worst case scenario your hobby that brought so much joy to your live is poisoned, probably irreparably.
Besides, with the mentality of corporate railroading nowadays especially with the fake economy we "rely on," this is the WORST time in history to hire on with a Class 1.
One last thing: if you can't stand having your arsehole gorged out by a twelve inch sandpaper dildo (management) then railroading isn't a career choice for you.
