The wonderful world of small shipments before UPS, FedEX and the trucks. In an era of "jobber" distribution,LCL in big markets was among the hottest traffic, up there with passengers, the US Mail and Railway Express.
The Northwestern Pacific had overnight service too, up till about 1950.
Then most railroads woke up to the fact that it was very labor intensive and costly and dropped it, although some, I think it was GN, kept it right up until the BN merger.
