The Erie Railroad hauled a great deal of LCL freight between Chicago & New York / New Jersey, for the big Eastern Forwarder Lifschultz Fast Freight. Once the college MBA types got a good look at the books, they realized that Erie was losing a dollar a ton on LCL, but making it up in volume !!!
Part of the reason Espee was successful in their LCL business was due to their coordination with Pacific Motor Transport.
