You are forgetting a fortune in tax money was spent on roads to accommodate the automobile. And the auto clubs were used as a lobby against tracks in the street.
The automobile and its many, many ancillaries became the mainstay of the US economy. And still is - do you really think Facebook and SnapChat can support a healthy US economy? How much of a "service industry" do really rich people, who progressively have most all of the money, need?
Not to mention potential robotics and AI effect on future number of human jobs required.
Salient point being in a world of excess manufacturing capacity what country is going to want to unseat the automobile since, whatever are its inefficiencies, it provides so much employment.
