844 will be re-lettered as it was when it came to the museum about 1986...(as painted circa 1980 by UP)... with "Union Pacific 844" on the nose, and a shield and number on the cab. Research shows that there were a number of variations of lettering, shield, and hand rail colors. Choosing early 1980's meant we would duplicate what we have, and not second guess earlier sceams. Of note... 844 never had a dark green patch on the top of the short hood, per a forensic paint study...
For those who care, we are spot priming tomorrow am... then grey on the roof on Wednesday... a few days later we will spray yellow, then the red stripe, then the grey on the frame and tank. Lettering is on hand, from UP's offical supplier, matching closely (exactly?) what was on her on arrival.
UP Armour Yellow and Harbourmist Grey have been problematic... We have the offical, current UP DuPont codes... the yellow is more red that the 1960's color. We found that Harbourmist grey has changed over the life of the locomotive...

PS We are planning to repaint 1000 back to its original UP black... but it will be a bit (a year or two) before that happens...
