I did some more detective work about Stonehurst and found this :

Here's a little more info:

The trackage was indeed known on the SP as the "Stonehurst Branch", with the SP / WP crossing known as "Stonehurst" on the SP and "Elmhurst" on the WP.

After WP installed TCS on the First Sub, the crossing at "Elmhurst" was considered "Interlocking Remote-Controlled" (according to WP Timetable Number 3 dated July 28, 1974). It was under the control of the WP First Sub Dispatcher in Sacramento.

SP movements over the crossing were governed by Absolute Signals. A single head target signal was on each side of the crossing, mounted on a pole between the curb and the sidewalk.

SP movements would hit a "bug" when approaching the crossing, causing a track occupancy light to appear on the dispatcher's consol. I'm not sure if there was an enunciator, as well. At any rate, if there were no conflicting movements on the WP, the dispatcher would clear the signal for the SP movement.

Regarding the question about when the double track was converted to single track, looking in SP Western Division Timetable Number 260 dated April 24, 1955, the "Stonehurst Branch" is still shown on the Niles Subdivision schedule page. It appears to be single track - at least, it's certainly not notated as being Double Track.

Hope some of this helps.
