For a long time the Port of Oakland (sometimes called by the nickname "POO") has tried to make themselves the first place containerships stop on the Cali route from Asia. But the way ships are loaded from bottom to top its not very feasible. So many more containers are taken off at the So Cal ports than would be the case at Oakland due to the territory the So Cal ports cover. Its a huge population base! As was mentioned awhile back on TO Evergreen Marine (and a couple of others including OOCL) used to do much more import business at "POO" than they do now. But economic realities got in the way and Evergreen Marine retrenched. In fact they have also retrenched a bit at the Port of LA. Evergreen Marine does more business at Port of Tacoma now due to economies of scale. OOCL on the other hand moved their stuff to the So Cal ports and plan to do even more business at the So Cal ports at the expense of the ports in the Pacific Northwest. Such is the ebb and flow of the container business. There will be more mergers too and that will effect the amount of containers each port handles. Business is tough for some of these companies right now.
