Rest assured the highway lobby is pulling the strings behind every anti-rail transit campaign in the country. This is by far the largest and most powerful economic bloc in the U.S. Just for starters 25% of all retail sales in the U.S. are automobiles. By highway lobby I mean the oil industry, the auto manufacturers, the rubber companies and other parts suppliers, highway construction and maintenance bureaucracy, the auto repair business, automobile insurance companies, the trucking industry. The list goes on and on - this is the mainstay of the U.S. economy.

Public transit probably represents something like a penny on the surface transportation dollar. The highway lobby has always wanted that penny. Their objective is 100% market share for the internal combustion engine automobile and truck.

Electric railway systems are efficient, durable and affordable when compared to the costs of freeways. They are the only viable system that can supplement the automobile. Forget monorails, maglevs and bus rapid transit; they are either inferior or unproven. That is why highway interests are always trying to tout these novelties - they are bound to fail and waste what little money there is available for transit.
