I am fascinated by the disproportionate focus on motive power, be it steam or diesel, in museums. Here, at NSRM, we are as guilty of this problem as any. Someone who is blind to railroad history would get the wrong impression of what makes up a railroad. In our front building are four locomotives and one passenger car. There wasn’t a four to one ratio of locomotive to cars on any railroad that I know of. Locomotives are very interesting and they did make the smoke and noise but really a more accurate museum might have one hundred cars, one caboose, and one locomotive. That said I can’t see getting rid of any of our locomotives.
