Thank you vrry much for your insightful and
excellent post. I was told long ago that
electrifying an existing line that uses diesel-
electric locomotives is as expensive as putting
that line in in the first place. Huyge capital
costs.

YOu make excellent points, but they all rest
on the assumption that plenty of electricity is
available for those electric trains -- HSR and
Caltrain,.
Here is what "hirail" posted on Feb. 23 about this:

According to a very small piece buried in the Portland newspaper, neither Caltrain or California High Speed Rail have been allocated access to the power grid. Story noted that
with nearly a dozen power plants west of the Mississippi scheduled to shut down to comply with emissions, power availability for such projects seems unlikely unless it's bought from Mexico.

BNeing allowed access to teh power grid is one thing,
which the huge political machine here in California
should have no trouble at all with, but -- is there
enough electricity for new users? THAT is THE question
of the dercade!
Anyone know how much electricity CAHSR would use per
day when fully operational? Ditto for Caltrain when
fully electrified? And hpw much oes BVART use per day?
TIA for any info!
