Interesting you mention this. Up here in Portland, a lot of us are critical of MAX light rail because it provides virtually no 'burb to 'burb service - it is primarily a means of getting people into the downtown core from several different compass points.
Also, MAX seems less about moving people at the present time as it is about driving future development patterns. I have always thought this is why the overall transit ridership up here doesn't seem to be climbing like it should. MAX goes where urban planners want to see housing and employment centers develop, not so much to where they have already developed.
In SoCal, your development patterns are already well established, so your transit should be less concerned with driving development and more concerned about taking people to places where they want to go. It seems to me that a lot of transit folks forget about that detail.
