We're not going to implant chips Edward, even for pedestrian and bicyclist safey, that would track our location, and report it to who (?) any time soon, hopefully.
But, of course, I'm going to confess that I am part of a vast conspiracy, that's for postponing that obvious and "doable" and totally "big brother" type of solution, at least for now.
I continue to be amazed in the visual recognition systems and artificial intelligence breakthroughs in detecting things like pedestrians and bikes, and other cars. All without "big brother" hysteria that would be associated with the chipping every "chimp" out there crossing a street, or riding a bike. .
Our real problem is not detecting, but rather with "predicting" how the autonomously "chimp brain computer" operated pedestrians and bicyclist's will behave. They have a terrible human tendency toward erratic and unpredictable behavior, and some seem to have an unrealistic expectation of the outcomes they should realistically expect as biological organisms, when exposed to extreme forces generated by the laws of physics, when they inappropriately "interface" negatively, with the environment and/or the vehicles surrounding them.
I am not against all electronic monitoring. For example, I support a fully automated electronic license plate, with transponders that can emit a signal to other vehicles with information about the presence, heading, speed, and direction, to prevent an unplanned inter-vehicular interface,
I am even for such a system that allows for automated traffic enforcement, even with conventional vehicles, where an officer rolls on a car and already has read the license plate, electronically, and knows the owner, and if that information isn't right, of if it is suspected stolen, and other negative interfaces with bad guys for the officer, Also it allows you to automate the time spent on paperwork issuing tickets, allows for proper collection of fee's, toll collection, enforcement of truck weights, hours of service, hazmat tracking, and can even confirm insurance coverage, etc.
And, I am all for the integration of the transponders to and from such an electronic license plate, with data from traffic signals, and the like, back and forth to the vehicle, confirming "authority" to proceed, to enter intersections and the like. This kind of DSRC solution may ultimately be necessary to assure an optimally efficient, fully, and safely automated car.
Yes, as Pogo once noted, "we have met the enemy and it is us....." and it is the behavioral side of our "chimp" wired brains, that is the biggest hold up in full vehicle automation.
So are you willing to be "chipped" just to allow the "I don't believe in the laws of physics gene" to continue to be propagated among this small sub set of pedestrians, bicyclists;, and (dare I say...?) those poor innocents who jog on live choo-choo tracks with earbuds?
Chipping everyone, the ultimate nanny state meets the ultimate totalitarian state,..... combined in one convenient technological solution....?
